Step 1: Defining Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation:
Motivation is the driving force behind our actions. It is classified into two types:
• Intrinsic Motivation: Initiated from within an individual. The behavior itself is inherently rewarding, satisfying, or pleasurable.
• Extrinsic Motivation: Initiated by external rewards or to avoid negative consequences. The behavior is a means to an external end.
Step 2: Evaluating the Options:
• (A) Exercising to win a marathon: The driving goal is external recognition and winning a physical trophy/title (Extrinsic).
• (B) Painting, because you enjoy doing it: The motivation is internal happiness, self-expression, and personal pleasure derived from the activity itself (Intrinsic).
• (C) Working overtime to earn more salary: The motivating factor is monetary gain, which is an external tangible reward (Extrinsic).
• (D) Studying to get a scholarship: The objective is financial assistance and academic funding from external sources (Extrinsic).
