In March 1974, students in Bihar organized a massive agitation against the state government, inviting veteran Sarvodaya leader Jayaprakash Narayan (JP) to lead the movement.
Two major reasons for the Bihar Students' Movement were:
• Severe Economic Hardships and Inflation: India experienced severe economic distress in the early 1970s characterized by skyrocketing prices of essential food grains, oil, and basic commodities, coupled with widespread scarcity of essential goods, food shortages, and acute unemployment among educated youth.
• Rampant Political Corruption and Misgovernance: Students protested vigorously against pervasive administrative corruption, bribery, economic mismanagement, and inefficiency in government institutions within Bihar. They demanded structural reform in public governance and education.
