Woven fabrics are composed of a warp (lengthwise yarns) and a weft (crosswise filling yarns) interlaced at $90^\circ$ angles. A firmly woven fabric, such as cotton muslin, percale, or poplin, has a high thread count and stable structure, but can be split along its grainlines.
Step 2: Defining the Cutting Method:
The fastest cutting method is
Tearing (also known as rip-cutting).
- The process involves making a small cut with shears at the salvage of the fabric.
- The sewist then grips the fabric on both sides of the snip and pulls them apart in a quick motion.
- The fabric splits cleanly in a straight line along the path of a single weft or warp thread, extending to the opposite salvage.
Step 3: Why it is Limited to Firmly Woven Fabrics:
Tearing cannot be used on knits, delicate sheers, or loose weaves (like crepes or satins) because tearing would cause heavy warp distortion, severe fraying, and ruin the fabric structure.
