Step 1: The Context of Ship Modeling:
Ship modeling is a core practical activity in the NCC Naval Wing. After a cadet finishes building a powered or remote-controlled ship model, the most critical phase is its maiden launch to test buoyancy, trim, and watertight integrity.
Step 2: "When" to Place the Model in the Water:
A model should only be placed in the water after passing a strict pre-launch checklist:
• Curing Time: Ensure all paints, adhesives, and hull sealants are $100\%$ dry and cured.
• Internal Checks: Verify that batteries are fully charged and securely strapped down (to prevent shifting the center of gravity), the rudder servo is functional, and the propeller shaft is properly greased to prevent water seepage.
• Environment: Choose a calm, clear day with little to no wind, and select a shallow, still body of water (like a pool or a quiet pond) for the maiden launch to allow for easy retrieval in case of an emergency.
Step 3: "How" to Place the Model in the Water:
• The Lowering Process: Hold the model securely with two hands, supporting both the bow (front) and the stern (back). Lower it gently and horizontally onto the surface of the water. Do not drop it or slide it in from an angle, as this can force water over the deck line or damage the delicate rudder/propeller.
• The Release and Observation Phase: Do not let go immediately. Hold it lightly in the water to feel its buoyancy. Once released, observe the "trim." The model should sit perfectly level (upright) on its designated waterline. If it leans to one side (listing) or sits too deep at the bow/stern, retrieve it immediately and adjust the internal ballast weights before turning on the motors.
