Harappan bead and jewellery production relied on an extraordiry variety of raw materials. To construct these orments, craftsmen sourced stones like carnelian (a beautiful red stone), jasper, crystal, quartz, and steatite. They also utilized metals like gold, copper, and bronze, alongside organic materials such as shell, faience, and terracotta. Researchers can map out ancient trade routes by alyzing where these non-local materials were sourced (e.g., Lapis Lazuli from Badakhshan/Shortughai in Afghanistan, Shell from coastal sites like geshwar and Balakot, and Carnelian from Bharuch in Gujarat).
Step 2: Specialized Craft Centers and Technology:
Bead-making was a highly specialized, centralized industry. Centers like Chanhudaro, Lothal, and Balakot were almost exclusively dedicated to craft production. Examining unfinished beads, rejects, and waste materials reveals the sequence of technology used:
• Steatite, a very soft stone, was easily molded or worked into paste.
• Harder stones like carnelian were heated to obtain the deep red color, chipped into rough shapes, and then finely flaked into fil bead structures.
• Specialized copper drills, discovered at Chanhudaro, Lothal, and Harappa, show that precise mechanical drilling was a crucial technological step.
Step 3: Long-Distance Trade Networks and Social Signifiers:
The distribution of Harappan beads and jewellery indicates highly organized commercial networks. Archaeologists have found distinct Harappan carnelian beads and kidney-shaped faience persol orments as far as Mesopotamia, Oman, and the Persian Gulf, proving active maritime trade connections. Within Harappan society, these detailed, high-effort objects (like micro-beads or gold pendants) served as status symbols, reflecting social stratification, wealth distribution, and the distinct taste of the ruling elite.
