Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Understanding the Human-Nature Relationship:

The interaction between human beings and their physical environment has evolved through different historical stages, driven by technological advancement. This relationship is studied under three major geographical paradigms: Environmental Determinism, Possibilism, and Neo-Determinism.

Step 2: Analyzing the Three Core Paradigms:

Environmental Determinism (Naturalisation of Humans):
• In early human history, technology was extremely primitive, and humans were highly dependent on nature.
• Humans adapted to natural constraints, feared the elements, and worshipped natural forces (the sun, rain, and wild wind).
• In this stage, nature was an active, dictatorial force, and humans were passive agents who simply obeyed nature.
Possibilism (Humanisation of Nature):
• As humans developed science, technology, and a deeper understanding of natural laws, they began to overcome physical constraints.
• Humans created artificial environments and possibilities—such as health resorts in highlands, extensive agricultural fields, network systems, cities, and space exploration.
• Here, nature became a provider of opportunities, and humans became active agents modifying the landscape to suit their needs.
Neo-Determinism or 'Stop-and-Go' Determinism:
• Introduced by geographer Griffith Taylor as a middle path between determinism and possibilism.
• It asserts that there is no situation of absolute necessity (determinism) nor absolute freedom (possibilism).
• Humans can conquer nature only by obeying it (e.g., respecting natural limits to avoid environmental disasters like climate change, soil erosion, and resource depletion). It behaves like a traffic signal where development must stop and go to maintain ecological balance.

Step 3: Synthesis:

The physical environment provides the basic resources and setting for human activities, while human technology reshapes these settings. Modern geography emphasizes a sustainable, co-dependent relationship where humans modify nature but must respect its boundaries.
