Concept:
World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the globe every year on May 31. This annual celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, and what the international community can do to claim their right to health and healthy living.
Step 1:
The
World Health Organization (WHO) released the global report titled "Tobacco: Poisoning Our Planet" to coincide with World No Tobacco Day. This landmark document shifted the traditional focus slightly from human physiological destruction to broad-spectrum ecological damage.
Step 2:
Key findings highlighted in the WHO report include:
• Deforestation: Roughly 600 million trees are chopped down annually to clear land for tobacco farming and to cure tobacco leaves.
• Water Resource Depletion: The industry consumes approximately 22 billion tonnes of water every single year during processing.
• Carbon Footprint: Tobacco production emits nearly 84 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, severely worsening global greenhouse gas concentrations.
• Chemical Contamination: Cultivation uses enormous amounts of pesticides and fertilizers that run off into local waterways, poisoning ecosystems.
Because the report targets global multi-national environmental data alongside macro-health impacts, it was initiated and published directly by the global health body, the World Health Organization (WHO), based in Geneva, Switzerland.
