A complete recording system is always divided into two main stages: the Recording stage (storing the signal on the medium) and the Playback stage (retrieving and reproducing the stored signal).
Step 1: General Definition:
Playback is the process of retrieving, decoding, and reproducing previously recorded electrical, magnetic, or optical signals from a storage medium, and converting them back into their original acoustic or visual forms. Step 2: Explaining the Signal Chain:
During playback:
The playback head (on a tape deck) or the laser pickup (on an optical player) reads the stored physical, magnetic, or optical patterns on the medium.
This raw data is converted into a weak electrical signal.
This signal is amplified, decoded (and converted from digital back to analog if necessary), and sent to an output transducer (such as a loudspeaker or screen), reproducing the original sound or image.
