Step 1: Embryo sac types are classified by how many megaspores of the tetrad take part in forming the embryo sac: one (monosporic), two (bisporic), or all four (tetrasporic).
Step 2: In the Polygonum type, only the chalazal megaspore survives and its nucleus divides three times to give an 8-nucleate, 7-celled embryo sac. The other three megaspores degenerate.
Step 3: Since only a single functional megaspore is involved, this is called the monosporic type, and it is the most common type found in angiosperms.
