Ageing affects nearly every physiological system, and beyond the commonly cited muscular, cardiovascular and skeletal changes, the respiratory, nervous and joint systems also show clear, measurable decline that is worth outlining separately.
Respiratory system: The chest wall and lung tissue lose elasticity with age, and the muscles involved in breathing, such as the diaphragm, weaken. This reduces vital capacity, the maximum amount of air the lungs can move in one breath, and lowers the efficiency of oxygen exchange, making an older adult more prone to breathlessness during exertion.
Nervous system: Nerve conduction velocity, the speed at which signals travel along nerves, slows down with age, and the number of active neurons gradually decreases. This shows up practically as slower reaction time, reduced coordination, and a decline in balance control.
Joint and connective tissue: Cartilage that cushions the joints gradually wears thin, and the fluid that lubricates joints reduces in quantity and quality. This leads to stiffer joints, a smaller range of motion, and a higher likelihood of conditions like osteoarthritis.
Taken together, these changes in the respiratory, nervous and joint systems, alongside the muscular, cardiovascular and skeletal changes already well known, show why ageing brings a broad, whole-body decline in functional capacity rather than change in just one system.
