Write the ways to ensure active listening. (Any Four)
Show Hint
To immediately improve your active listening, practice the 70/30 rule: during any critical conversation, aim to spend $70\%$ of the time listening and absorbing, and only $30\%$ of the time speaking and asking questions.
Step 1: Introduction to Active Listening:
Active listening is a structured cognitive and physical communication technique that requires the listener to fully engage with, interpret, and evaluate the message delivered by the speaker. It is distinct from passive hearing, which is merely the physical registration of sound waves. Step 2: Four Key Methods to Ensure Active Listening:
An individual can systematically implement these four strategies to practice active listening:
Maintain Solid Physical Attentiveness (Eye Contact & Posture): Establishing direct, comfortable eye contact and maintaining an open, slightly forward-leaning posture signals respect and visual interest, which keeps both the speaker and listener focused.
Suspend Premature Judgment and Cognitive Interruption: A active listener suppresses their internal monologue and does not formulate counter-arguments or solutions while the speaker is talking. Instead, they wait until the speaker completes their thought before responding.
Practice Reflective Feedback (Paraphrasing): Periodically restating or paraphrasing the speaker's key points in the listener's own words (e.g., “So, if I understand correctly, your main concern is...”) helps verify and confirm mutual understanding.
Ask Targeted, Open-Ended Questions: Posing thoughtful, clarifying questions (such as “What happened next?” or “How did that impact the team?”) encourages the speaker to elaborate and provides deeper context for the conversation.
