Question

Which of the following statements indicate that disability is a social category?

• A. There are linkages between poverty and disability.
• B. There are linkages between past life and disability.
• C. There are linkages between disability and climate change.
• D. There are linkages between individual ability and disability.

Hint:

A social category is shaped by society. Which link joins disability to a social condition such as money?

Answer 1

The Correct Option is A

Step 1: Understanding the question:
The question asks which statement shows that disability is a social category. A social category means disability is shaped by society, such as income, work, and living conditions, and not only by the body of one person.

Step 2: Key idea:
Sociologists say that disability is not just a personal medical problem. Poverty and disability feed each other. Poor people face poor health care and risky work, so they have a higher chance of becoming disabled. Disabled people also find it hard to get jobs, so they stay poor.

Step 3: Check option (1):
A link between poverty and disability is a social link. It shows that society, money and opportunity are part of the story. So option (1) is RIGHT.

Step 4: Check option (2):
The idea of a past life is a religious or cultural belief, and it blames the person. It does not show disability as a social category. So option (2) is wrong.

Step 5: Check option (3):
A link with climate change is an environmental matter and is not the standard argument for disability as a social category. So option (3) is wrong.

Step 6: Check option (4):
A link with individual ability treats disability as a personal limit of one body. That is the medical or individual view, which is the opposite of the social view. So option (4) is wrong.

Final Answer:
The poverty and disability link shows disability as a social category. The answer is option (1).
