Spin finish is an oil-based chemical coating applied to synthetic fibers immediately after melt spinning. It is essential for the smooth downstream processing of the filaments.
Step 1: Surface Control and Friction.
Synthetic fibers are naturally smooth and can generate high friction when passing over metal guides. The spin finish provides A (Lubrication of fibre surface) to reduce this friction and prevent fiber damage.
Step 2: Managing Static and Integrity.
Synthetic polymers are excellent insulators and prone to building up static electricity. Spin finishes contain agents for C (Antistatic action) to prevent fibers from repelling each other. Additionally, it provides D (Cohesion of filaments), helping the individual filaments stay together as a single yarn bundle rather than fraying apart.
Step 3: Exclusion.
B (Setting of filaments) is typically achieved through thermal processes like heat setting or drawing, rather than the chemical application of a spin finish.
