Melt spinning requires the polymer to melt into a stable liquid without breaking down.
Step 2: The Nature of Acrylic Polymer.
Acrylic polymers have a very high degree of intermolecular attraction. As heat is applied, the energy required to melt the polymer is very close to the energy that causes chemical decomposition.
Step 3: Thermal Degradation and Process Choice.
Because of this poor thermal resistance, acrylic polymers undergo permanent chemical degradation before they reach a fluid state suitable for melt spinning. Therefore, it must be solidified in a liquid bath via wet spinning.
