Concept:
Narco-analysis, often colloquially termed "truth serum" testing, involves the intravenous administration of a drug (typically sodium pentothal) to induce various stages of consciousness. In a forensic context, it aims to lower a subject's inhibitions to retrieve information.
Step 1: Initial Consciousness to Subconscious State.
The process begins with the Awake stage (C), where the subject is fully conscious and responds normally. As the drug takes effect, the subject enters the Hypnotic stage (D). This is the critical forensic phase where the subject's imagination is neutralized, and uninhibited, often truthful, information emerges because they lack the cognitive energy to maintain a lie.
Step 2: Deepening Sedation.
As the dosage continues, the subject moves into the Sedative or dream state (A). In this stage, the subject falls into a natural-looking sleep and is no longer able to provide coherent verbal information.
Step 3: Total Anesthesia.
The final and deepest stage is the Anesthesia stage (B). At this point, the subject is completely unconscious and lacks all sensation; this stage is medically used for surgical interventions rather than interrogation.
