Concept:
A slip glaze is a glaze that consists primarily of raw natural clay (often containing natural fluxes like iron and calcium). The most famous historical example is Albany slip.
Step 1:
Because a slip glaze is mostly clay, it has a very high melting point. It lacks the heavy addition of synthetic fluxes that low-fire glazes use to melt at lower temperatures.
Step 2:
To get clay to melt into a glassy glaze, the kiln must be fired to very high temperatures (typically Cone 6 to Cone 10, or $1200^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$).
Step 3:
We must match this high firing temperature with a clay body that can withstand it without melting into a puddle.
• Earthenware and Terracotta are low-fire bodies. They would melt or bloat before the slip glaze matured.
• Porcelain is high-fire but is highly refined and traditionally paired with clear, refined feldspathic glazes to highlight its translucency.
• Stoneware is a robust, high-fire body that is traditionally and historically paired with the earthy, rich tones of natural slip glazes.
Step 4:
Stoneware provides the necessary high-temperature structural support and aesthetic match for traditional clay-based slip glazes.
