Elimination approach: Meteorological drought is defined purely by a measured shortfall in total rainfall against the long-term average, regardless of crop water demand. Contingent drought occurs when rain fails during a normally rain-bearing period in an otherwise adequate-rainfall region. Permanent drought characterises arid regions where rainfall is chronically insufficient for any cropping.
None of these match a situation where the region is humid (rainfall looks sufficient on paper) yet the crop still suffers a water deficit because evapotranspiration demand exceeds what that rainfall can supply. This mismatch, where the shortage is not obvious from rainfall totals alone, is specifically termed invisible drought.
