As dislodged particles are carried by a thin, uniform film of water across the surface, this becomes sheet erosion, still without visible channels.
As flow paths merge, water concentrates into small, shallow channels that can still be smoothed out by normal tillage, rill erosion.
Left unchecked, rills deepen and widen into channels too large for tillage to remove, gully erosion.
Finally, gullies that continue to enlarge over years become deep, permanent, un-reclaimable channels, ravines.
