Concept:
A selvedge is the finished edge of a woven fabric that prevents it from unraveling. While traditional looms create a natural selvedge, modern shuttle-less looms require specialized methods to secure the edges of the weft yarn.
Step 1: Analyze the role of thermoplasticity.
Thermoplastic fibers (like polyester, nylon, or polypropylene) melt when exposed to heat and solidify when cooled. In shuttle-less weaving of industrial fabrics, a heated element or ultrasonic device is used at the edge of the loom.
Step 2: Identify the fused selvedge mechanism.
The Fused selvedge is created by melting the edges of these thermoplastic yarns together. This creates a very flat, strong, and clean edge that is ideal for heavy industrial applications where a bulky traditional selvedge would be problematic.
Step 3: Differentiate from other types.
• Tucked: The weft end is tucked back into the shed.
• Leno: Uses a special binding yarn to lock the weft.
• Tape: Uses a separate adhesive tape.
