Concept:
Shedding is the process of separating warp yarns into two layers to allow the passage of the weft yarn. Different mechanisms offer varying levels of control over the warp threads.
Step 1: Comparing Shedding Mechanisms.
• Tappet Shedding: Used for simple weaves like plain or twill; it controls groups of warp ends using a limited number of heald shafts (usually up to 8).
• Dobby Shedding: Manages more complex patterns by controlling a larger number of heald shafts (typically up to 24 or 32).
• Jacquard Shedding: This system does away with heald shafts entirely. Instead, it uses a harness where each individual warp yarn is connected to an independent control element.
Step 2: Identifying Individual Control.
Because the Jacquard mechanism allows for the individual control of each warp end, it is the only system capable of weaving highly intricate, large-scale designs such as brocades, damasks, and complex figured patterns.
