Traditional Indian textiles are classified by the stage at which the primary design or structure is created.
Step 1: Analyze the production stage of each textile.
• Pre-loom: In Odisha Ikat, the design is created on the yarns through tying and dyeing before they ever touch the loom.
• On-loom: In Banaras Brocade, the design is created during the weaving process using extra weft yarns (Zari) and a jacquard or jala attachment.
• Post-loom: Rajasthan Lehariya is a tie-dye technique performed on the already woven fabric.
• Non-loom: Kashmir Namda is a felted textile made by matting wool fibers together using moisture and pressure, without any weaving or a loom.
