Concept:
Microscopic analysis is a primary method for fiber identification. Each textile fiber possesses unique longitudinal and cross-sectional characteristics under a microscope.
Step 1: Match characteristics to the respective fibers.
• Cotton (A): Under a microscope, cotton looks like a twisted ribbon. These twists are technically called convolutions (A-III).
• Silk (B): Silk is a natural filament. Cultivated silk is characterized by a very smooth, transparent, rod-like appearance (B-II).
• Wool (C): Wool fibers have a very distinct surface made of overlapping scales (cuticle) and a natural wave-like "bend" called crimp (C-I).
• Rayon (D): Regenerated fibers like viscose rayon are manufactured filaments that are smooth but often have lengthwise striations. When processed, they can be given a "crimped" effect to mimic wool (D-IV).
