Laterisation is a tropical weathering process, so we can rule out any option that keeps silica in the profile. Option (b), "Removal of silica from soil" alone, is incomplete because removing silica has a counterpart: something must be left behind and concentrated. Option (a), Fe and Al moving from upper to lower horizon, actually describes podzolisation, a temperate-climate process, not laterisation. Only when the loss of silica is combined with the resulting build-up of iron and aluminium oxides (sesquioxides) do we get the full picture of laterisation, which is exactly what option (c) states.
