Placing each nutrient on a mobility matrix: Bray classified nutrients on two independent axes - mobility within the plant (how easily it is retranslocated from old to new tissue) and mobility within the soil (how easily it moves to the root by mass flow or diffusion).
Nitrogen is mobile in both plant and soil; boron and zinc are relatively immobile in both plant and soil.
Phosphorus sits in the opposite corner of that matrix - it is fixed strongly by soil colloids and moves very little in soil, yet once absorbed it is readily retranslocated within the plant from older to younger tissue, making it mobile in the plant but immobile in the soil.
