On April 3, 1984, he flew aboard Soyuz T-11 and stayed at the Salyut 7 space station.
He spent about eight days in space and carried out experiments related to biomedicine and remote sensing of India.
When then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked him how India looked from space, he replied "Saare Jahan Se Achha", making the phrase famous again.
He became the first Indian, and to date the only Indian citizen, to travel to space.
