Article 213 of the Constitution of India grants the Governor of a State the power to promulgate Ordinances. This is a legislative power that can be exercised only when the State Legislative Assembly (or both Houses, where applicable) is not in session and the Governor is satisfied that circumstances exist which render it necessary for him to take immediate action. An ordinance has the same force and effect as an act of the legislature but must be laid before the legislature when it reassembles and ceases to operate after six weeks from reassembly if not approved. This power is analogous to the President's ordinance-making power under Article 123.
