Concept:
In the Indian tradition, temple architecture often included specialized spaces designed specifically for the performance of sacred dramas.
Step 1: Linking the architecture to the performance form.
Kuttambalam is the traditional temple theatre found in the Hindu temples of Kerala. It is specifically built for the performance of Kuddiyattam (Kutiyattam), which is recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The Kuttambalam is designed to provide perfect acoustics and a sacred atmosphere for this ancient form of Sanskrit theatre, which is performed by the Chakyar and Nambiar communities.
