Concept:
• Dagdha refers to burns caused by fire or heat. Acharya Sushruta, the pioneer of surgery, classified burns into four types based on the depth of tissue involvement and clinical signs (Lakshana).
• These classifications are described in Sushruta Samhita, Sutra Sthana, Chapter 12.
Step 1: Matching Plusta Dagdha (1-A)
Plusta Dagdha (Scorching): This is the most superficial burn.
Symptoms include discoloration of the skin (Durvarnyata) and intense heat/burning without blisters.
Step 2: Matching Durdagdha (2-B)
Durdagdha (Improperly burnt): This involves more heat than Plusta.
Symptoms include severe burning sensation (Daha) and the formation of blisters (Sphota). It is extremely painful.
Step 3: Matching Samyak-dagdha (3-C)
Samyak-dagdha (Properly/Moderately burnt): The burn is deeper into the skin layers.
Symptoms include the area becoming dark or like the color of a Tala fruit (blackish), and it is not very elevated. It forms a stable crust.
Step 4: Matching Atidagdha (4-D)
Atidagdha (Over-burnt): This is a deep-tissue burn involving muscles and sometimes bones.
Symptoms include Charred tissues, severe loss of sensation, and deep destruction of the underlying structures.
