A prototroph is an organism that doesn't need any extra growth supplements and is nutritionally self-sufficient. It can manufacture all its essential components like amino acids, nucleic acids, vitamins, and other cellular elements from basic inorganic nutrients. In contrast, auxotrophs are mutant strains that lack specific enzymes necessary for processing nutrients, and they can only thrive when provided with supplemented growth media.
