Concept:
Different pump designs are engineered to excel under specific operating conditions. The two most critical parameters for selecting a pump are the required system flow rate (capacity) and the required pressure resistance (head).
Step 1: Centrifugal pumps operate using a high-speed spinning impeller that imparts kinetic energy to the fluid, slinging it outward. This open, continuous-flow design is incredibly efficient at moving bulk volumes of liquid.
Step 2: For pushing small amounts of fluid against extreme pressures (high head), positive displacement pumps (like piston or gear pumps) are required because they physically trap and force the liquid forward.
Step 3: Thick, highly viscous fluids (like heavy oils or syrups) create massive internal friction against the fast-spinning impeller of a centrifugal pump, drastically reducing its efficiency.
Step 4: Because they rely on kinetic energy rather than mechanical trapping, centrifugal pumps are universally recognized as the best choice for moving large quantities (high flow rate) of thin fluids (like water) at moderate pressures.
