Plant layout refers to the physical arrangement of industrial facilities, including machinery, workstations, and material handling equipment. The choice of layout depends on the variety and volume of the products being manufactured.
1. Product Layout (Line Layout):
Used for mass production of standardized items. Machines are arranged in a sequence according to the operations required by the product (e.g., an assembly line).
2. Process Layout (Functional Layout):
Similar machines are grouped together in one department. This is ideal for low-volume, high-variety production (e.g., a general machine shop).
3. Why Refrigerator Manufacturing uses a Combination Layout:
The manufacturing of complex consumer appliances like refrigerators involves two distinct stages:
• Process Phase: Individual components (compressors, plastic linings, metal panels) are fabricated in different departments using a Process Layout. For example, all sheet metal work is done in one area, and all plastic molding is done in another.
• Product Phase: Once the parts are ready, they move to a final assembly line where the refrigerator is built step-by-step in a Product Layout.
