Concept:
Drill jigs are classified based on their structural design and how they support multi-axis machining:
• Template / Plate Jig: A simple plate containing drill bushings that clamps onto a single face of the workpiece, allowing machining on one plane only.
• Channel Jig: Features a U-shaped cross-section that permits machining on a single face or limited parallel faces.
• Box Jig (or Tumble Jig): Completely encloses the workpiece within a rigid, box-like frame equipped with a hinged lid or latch for loading.
Step 1: Analyze the requirement for multi-plane machining.
When a workpiece requires holes to be drilled on multiple faces (e.g., top, bottom, and sides) relative to a fixed datum layout, unclamping and repositioning the part in separate jigs introduces alignment errors and increases handling time.
Step 2: Evaluate the Box Jig design.
A box jig houses the workpiece securely inside its frame. Drill guide bushings can be integrated into multiple faces of the box structure. The exterior faces of the box jig are precision-machined flat, allowing the operator to tip or "tumble" the entire jig assembly onto different sides on the drill press table. This permits multi-axis drilling on different planes in a single setup, ensuring high geometric accuracy.
