Step 1: Understanding theories of error in Indian philosophy.
Different schools of Indian philosophy offer distinct theories to explain perceptual error (khyāti). These are:
Anyathākhyāti – advocated by Nyāya
Asatkhyāti – by Buddhist schools
Ātmakhyāti – by Yogācāra Buddhists
Vivekakhyāti – by Sāṅkhya-Yoga Step 2: Nyāya perspective.
According to Nyāya, perceptual error occurs due to misapprehension — mistaking something for what it is not (e.g., mistaking a rope for a snake). This is termed as Anyathākhyāti or misapprehension theory.
