Step 1: Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) are benign smooth-muscle tumours that outgrow their blood supply, so degenerative changes are common within them.
Step 2: The most common degeneration overall is hyaline degeneration. As the tumour enlarges, the muscle and fibrous tissue are gradually replaced by homogeneous, eosinophilic, glassy (hyaline) material, making this the commonest type seen.
Step 3: Why the other options are wrong: calcareous (calcific) degeneration is typically a late change seen in older, often postmenopausal women (womb-stone) and is not the commonest overall. Red degeneration is characteristically associated with pregnancy and is much less common. Cystic degeneration usually follows hyaline change when the hyalinised areas liquefy, so it is a sequel rather than the most common primary type.
Step 4: Therefore hyaline degeneration is the most common degeneration of fibroids.
