Concept: Seismic waves travel through the Earth in different ways. The way a wave moves the material it passes through tells us its type.
Step 1: P-waves (primary waves) are longitudinal waves. In a longitudinal wave the particles of the material vibrate back and forth in the same direction in which the wave travels.
Step 2: This back-and-forth motion alternately compresses (squeezes) and stretches (elongates) the material as the wave passes. Hence the waves responsible for elongating and squeezing the material are the P-waves.
