Glycolysis is the first step of glucose breakdown in both animals and plants. During glycolysis 6-carbon glucose molecule is converted into 2 molecules of 2 carbon pyruvic acid. In this process net gain of 2 ATP and 2 NADH, occurs. It is a common pathway for both aerobic and anaerobic modes of respiration. The Kreb's cycle pathway and ETS then follow glycolysis for complete breakdown of glucose. The pyruvic acid formed enters Krebs cycle in aerobic respiration and ethanol is formed by fermentation in anaerobic respiration.
