Step 1: Recall the term. The space of Disse, also called the perisinusoidal space, is a microscopic gap found in the liver. Step 2: It lies between a hepatocyte and a hepatic sinusoid and contains blood plasma. Step 3: Microvilli of the hepatocytes project into this space, so plasma proteins and other components leaking from the sinusoid can be taken up by the hepatocytes. This is also where hepatic stellate (Ito) cells reside. Step 4: Because the structure is defined by the hepatocyte-sinusoid relationship, it is unique to the liver; spleen, lymph node and bone do not contain it.
