Step 2: The submandibular gland is the commonest site. About 80 percent of salivary calculi form here, most often within the submandibular (Wharton's) duct.
Step 3: This predilection is explained by the gland's secretion. Submandibular saliva is more alkaline, more mucinous and richer in calcium, and the long, upward-running Wharton's duct drains against gravity, all of which favour stasis and stone formation.
Step 4: The parotid (serous saliva) and sublingual gland are far less commonly affected, and minor salivary gland stones are rare. Hence the answer is the submandibular gland.
