Question:

Read the passage and answer the question.

Passage (extract): We have seen, in our time, attempts to achieve a kind of egalitarian society and the picture of it after it was achieved. But this was done, by and large, through the use of physical force. It may even be that, like a gas kept confined within containers under great pressure, or water held back by a big dam, once the barrier breaks, the reaction will one day sweep back with a violence equal in extent and intensity to what was used to establish and maintain the outward egalitarian form. This enforced egalitarianism contains, in its bosom, the seed of its own destruction.

According to the passage, people ultimately overturn a social order

Show Hint

Think about what the gas in a container and the water behind a dam stand for.

The Correct Option is A

Solution and Explanation

The stem word is "overturn", so we look for the place where the passage describes an order being swept away. That is the gas and dam sentence: pressure builds, the barrier breaks, and "the reaction will one day sweep back with a violence equal in extent and intensity to what was used to establish and maintain the outward egalitarian form". The order that gets swept away is the one held up by force.

  1. which is based on coercion and oppression: Coercion is force applied on people, which is exactly what the passage means by physical force and "enforced egalitarianism". The dam image says the reaction comes back with violence equal to the force used, and the writer closes with the seed of its own destruction. So an order resting on coercion is the one people finally overturn.
  2. which does not satisfy their basic needs: Basic needs are never discussed. The passage is about possessions, the acquisitive instinct and material satisfaction, and it argues that even a paradise of material satisfaction spells neither peace nor progress. Unmet needs are not the trigger the writer names.
  3. which is based upon conciliation and rapprochement: Conciliation and rapprochement mean bringing sides together in agreement. That is the peaceful, voluntary route the writer supports. An order built that way is the kind he expects to endure, so it is the reverse of the answer.
  4. which is not congenial to the spiritual values of the people: The passage does prefer spiritual values to material ones, but it never says an order is overturned for being out of step with them. What causes the overturn in the text is the pressure of force, not a mismatch with spiritual values. This option borrows a real idea from the passage and attaches an event to it that the writer never describes.

So the correct choice is (A). Force invites an equal and violent reaction, and that reaction is the overturn.

Let's summarize:

  • The gas and dam image is the passage's model of a forced order bursting open.
  • Coercion equals the physical force the writer names, so (A) sits on that image.
  • (C) names the peaceful route, which is the opposite of the trigger for an overturn.

People ultimately overturn a social order based on coercion and oppression, option (A).
