The Traditional Art of Rangoli
Rangoli — derived from “Rang” (colour) + “aavalli” (row of colours) — is an age
old Indian folk art of geometric/symmetrical floor (and sometimes wall/ceiling) designs, often
including natural motifs. Women have preserved it across generations, originally on auspicious
occasions using rice flour (also feeding creatures). Today it spans weddings/ceremonies with
materials like stone powder, coloured rice, and sawdust (allowing even floating patterns). While
styles and names vary regionally (Rangoli, Kolam, Chowkpurna, Mugullu), the basic method
remains consistent.
