Step 1: Only IgG crosses the placenta. So the antibodies a mother passes to her baby are the IgG-type, durable antitoxin antibodies.
Step 2: Tetanus and diphtheria immunity is antitoxin IgG produced after toxoid vaccination, so these antibodies cross the placenta well and protect the newborn. Measles maternal IgG also crosses and gives passive protection for the first few months, which is why the measles vaccine is delayed to about 9 months.
Step 3: Polio protection depends largely on secretory IgA at the gut mucosa, which does not cross the placenta. Transplacental transfer of useful polio immunity is poor, so the newborn is not reliably protected against polio by maternal antibody.
