Step 1: Liver biopsy is used to grade and stage chronic liver disease, quantify metals, evaluate cholestasis and assess treatment in many conditions. The task is to find the one where it is NOT indicated.
Step 2: Wilson's disease (quantitative hepatic copper), chronic hepatitis B and C (grading and staging) and autoimmune hepatitis (diagnosis and assessment) are all standard indications for liver biopsy.
Step 3: Amoebic hepatitis or amoebic liver abscess is the exception. Biopsy or aspiration of an amoebic abscess risks bleeding, rupture and secondary bacterial infection, and the diagnosis is made by serology and imaging plus a response to therapy rather than by biopsy.
Step 4: So liver biopsy is contraindicated or unnecessary in amoebic hepatitis, making it the correct answer to this exception question.
