Comprehension
A newly formed state government wantsto bring more development in the state. Therefore, the government proposed to launch various welfare programmes. Before bringing up any welfare programme, the state government intended to understand the population percentage of the state by age groups, so that the government could plan the welfare programmes accordingly. The state government found that the state’s 30 per cent of the population were children between the age group of 0-15. Next to child population, 17.75 per cent of the population were adolescents between the age group of 16 and 25. The early adult population, i.e., the age groups 26 to 35 were 17.25 per cent, 36 to 45 were 14.50 per cent, respectively. The population who are between the age group of 46 to 55 constitute 14.25 per cent and the elderly population of the state, i.e., 56 to 65 (5.12%) and 66 above (1.13%) was comparatively less than the other age groups. To get a better clarity, the state government concerned is seeking the answers to following questions:

People "below the age of 26" cover two brackets from the passage, 0-15 (30%) and 16-25 (17.75%). Adding these gives the combined share below 26, which is then applied to the batch of 5,600 people.

  1. 2515: this is lower than the actual combined share of 47.75% would give, and does not match \( 0.4775 \times 5600 \).
  2. 1746: this is far too small to represent both brackets below 26 combined out of 5,600 people.
  3. 1660: also too small for the same reason.
  4. 2674: \( 0.4775 \times 5600 = 2674 \), matching the combined 0-15 and 16-25 shares applied to 5,600.

Adding the two brackets, \(30\% + 17.75\% = 47.75\%\), and applying that to 5,600 gives \( 0.4775 \times 5600 = 2674 \).

So the correct answer is option (D), 2674.

Question: 2

There are 400 million people below 36 years. How many million (approx.) people are in the age group 56-65?

Approach Solution -2

"Below 36 years" covers three brackets, 0-15 (30%), 16-25 (17.75%) and 26-35 (17.25%), adding to 65%. Since this 65% equals 400 million people, that fixes the value of 1% of the state's population, which can then be applied to the 56-65 bracket (5.12%).

  1. 32.72 million: close to the right figure but not exact, since it does not carry through the precise value of 1% (\(400 / 65\)) before applying it to 5.12%.
  2. 25.75 million: too small to match 5.12% once 1% is correctly set at about 6.15 million.
  3. 31.50 million: \( \frac{400}{65} \times 5.12 = 31.50 \), matching the value of 1% carried through correctly.
  4. 59.30 million: too large, and would only match if the 56-65 bracket's share were closer to 9.6% instead of 5.12%.

Since 65% of the population equals 400 million, 1% equals \( \frac{400}{65} \approx 6.1538 \) million. The 56-65 bracket is 5.12% of the population, so it comes to \( 6.1538 \times 5.12 \approx 31.50 \) million.

So the correct answer is option (C), 31.50 million.

Question: 3

Approach Solution -2

The 56-65 bracket is 5.12% of the state's population, and this is given as 20 million people here, which fixes the value of 1% of the population for this scenario. That value can then be used to work out the 16-25 bracket (17.75%) and the 46-55 bracket (14.25%) and compare them.

  1. 15.6 million: larger than the gap between these two brackets once the population base is fixed by the 56-65 figure.
  2. 12.18 million: matches the gap between the 16-25 and 46-55 brackets once both are worked out from the population base set by the 56-65 figure of 20 million.
  3. 28.4 million: far too large a gap for two brackets whose shares, 17.75% and 14.25%, are only a few points apart.
  4. 34.7 million: also too large for the same reason, a gap this size would need brackets much further apart in share than 17.75% and 14.25%.

Since 5.12% of the population equals 20 million, that fixes 1% of the population, and scaling the 16-25 share and the 46-55 share by this value and comparing them gives a gap of about 12.18 million.

So the correct answer is option (B), 12.18 million.

Question: 4

If the difference between the number of people in the age groups 46-55 and 26-35 is 15.75 million, then total population of the state is approximately?

Approach Solution -2

The 26-35 bracket is 17.25% of the population and the 46-55 bracket is 14.25%, a gap of 3 percentage points between them. This gap is given as 15.75 million people, which fixes the value of 1% of the state's total population.

  1. 360.23 million: too small, and does not match \( 15.75 \div 3 \times 100 \).
  2. 390 million: also too small for the same reason.
  3. 400 million: closer, but still short of the figure that 15.75 million spread over 3 percentage points actually gives.
  4. 525 million: \( \frac{15.75}{3} = 5.25 \) million per 1%, and \( 5.25 \times 100 = 525 \) million, matching this option exactly.

Since 3 percentage points of the population equal 15.75 million, 1% equals \( \frac{15.75}{3} = 5.25 \) million, and the full 100% comes to \( 5.25 \times 100 = 525 \) million.

So the correct answer is option (D), 525 million.

Among the age brackets offered as answer choices, comparing their shares of the population settles which one is the largest.

  1. 16 to 25: this bracket holds 17.75% of the population, the highest share among the three named brackets in the options.
  2. 26 to 35: this bracket holds 17.25%, close to the 16-25 bracket but still smaller.
  3. 36 to 45: this bracket holds 14.50%, clearly behind both of the brackets above.
  4. None of the above: this would only be correct if none of the three listed brackets held the top share among themselves, but 16-25 already beats the other two named options, so this does not apply.

Comparing the three named brackets directly, 17.75% (16-25) is higher than both 17.25% (26-35) and 14.50% (36-45).

So the correct answer is option (A), 16 to 25.
