Step 1: An abrasion is the destruction of skin involving only the superficial layers of the epidermis. It is produced by friction or impact against a rough surface.
Step 2: Abrasions are classified into types such as scratches, grazes, pressure or friction abrasions, impact or contact abrasions, and patterned abrasions. A graze is therefore a sub-type of abrasion.
Step 3: A graze is the most common type of abrasion. It occurs when there is movement between the skin and a rough surface in contact with it, scraping away the superficial epidermis along a path.
Step 4: Bruise and contusion are the same thing (extravasation of blood into tissues from a blunt force) and laceration is a tear of the skin and deeper tissues, so none of these match a graze.
